New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension Service publications have provided translations of recent gardening publications from English to Spanish to increase access to information on vegetable gardening.
As Spanish is the first and main language of many people in the community and state, NMSU Extension publications have provided Spanish translations to offer guidance of management techniques to improve gardening success.
“Huertos caseros en Nuevo México” and “Zonas de cultivo, variedades de cultivo recomendadas e información sobre la plantación y la cosecha para los huertos caseros en Nuevo México” were part of those recently revised and translated.
“Vegetable gardening is a rewarding pastime but there are challenges associated with growing in the desert southwest that inspire many people to learn management techniques,” said Stephanie Walker, professor and Extension vegetable specialist.
“By providing vegetable gardening guidance in Spanish we expect a greater number of people to access and use the information provided,” she said. “This will increase their vegetable gardening success.”
Currently, the most highly accessed publications are being translated. To provide the translations, Cooperative Extension Service publications personnel must prioritize key publications and seek out subject matter experts with enough knowledge of the Spanish language to produce the translations.
