A 200-acre solar power farm in Navarro County, southeast of Mildred, could be one step closer to reality after the Commissioners Court approved a zone that would allow tax abatements for the project.
According to the nonprofit Texas Business Coalition, the commissioners created the Armadillo Solar Center Reinvestment Zone. That will allow the Mildred Independent School District to offer tax abatements for the project.
The solar farm could power 42,500 homes and construction would create 200 jobs. However, once construction is completed, there would only be two new permanent jobs, the Coalition said.
The Armadillo Solar Center is seeking a limit of $20 million on the taxable value of the project, the Coalition reported, citing documents from the Texas Comptroller’s Office.
The company has leased land from six property owners so far and is expected to start engineering studies over the next year after a final lease is signed and environmental studies completed, according to the Coalition.
