Klayton Copeland scored 6 of his 8 points in overtime Saturday night, helping the TVCC Cardinals beat Panola, 76-74, to win the Region XIV Tournament.
Copeland's two most important points came on a pair of free throws with 1.8 seconds left in overtime to put TVCC over the top.
For the second straight game, the Cardinals built an early lead by raining 3s, this time hitting four 3s in 99 seconds midway through the first half. TVCC held the lead from that point until late in the second half, when Panola went on an 11-4 run to tie things up.
TVCC led at the half 36-30.
TVCC came into the tournament as the No. 4 seed and knocked off top-seed Lee College and second-seed Panola on its way to the title.
With the win, the Cardinals earn an automatic berth in the NJCAA Division I National Tournament March 20-25 in Hutchinson, Kansas.
Saturday, the Cardinals were led by Tournament MVP MJ Leslie, who had 23 points and 8 rebounds.
Makhi Dorsey added 17 points; Micah Clark had 12; Klayton Copeland 8; Devyn Franklin, Najee Jones, and Aliou Cissee each had 4; and Tylor Johnson and Quevian Adger each had 2 points.
