Congressman Jake Ellzey facilitated a meeting between staff and local agriculture leaders at the Anderson County Farm Bureau on September 10, 2024, to discuss pressing agricultural concerns affecting Texas farmers and the agricultural industry. The meeting addressed a range of topics crucial to the region's agricultural sector, including harmful chemicals in products and water (PFAS), tariffs on imports, declining farm income, and water issues in Texas.

The agenda included a Willmott Farms Hay Production tour led by Kent Willmott, providing insights into local agricultural practices. Discussions followed with input from attendees on the current legislative landscape and challenges farmers face. A key topic of interest was the harmful impact of PFAS chemicals on both human health and the environment. Concerns about the runoff of fire retardant foam in Johnson County were raised, highlighting the need for public awareness campaigns to address these growing issues.

Key takeaways from the meeting include the necessity for ad hoc deals in upcoming spending bills, the passage of the Farm Bill, and future meetings planned in Hill County in November and Johnson/Tarrant County in February to continue addressing agricultural and community issues.

"Protecting our farmers and ensuring the sustainability of agriculture in Texas is a top priority," said Congressman Ellzey. "These discussions underline the importance of ongoing legislative support for the agricultural sector and addressing issues like harmful chemicals in our water supply. I'm committed to ensuring our community's concerns are heard and acted upon in Washington. I want to thank all the board members for their time and input; these discussions are important, but it is also a commitment, and I am grateful for their time."
