Galveston College will resume its Lecture Series: New Worlds on Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. with a presentation by NASA astronaut Christina H. Koch at the college’s main campus Abe & Annie Seibel Foundation Wing.
“We’re excited to have NASA astronaut Christina Koch at Galveston College and for our students and community to have the opportunity to hear about her experiences in space exploration and discovery,” said lecture organizer and Galveston College Assistant Professor of Chemistry, Laimutis Bytautas, Ph.D. “Christina Koch is a highly accomplished astronaut and has achieved a lot of firsts for female astronauts. I believe that having the opportunity to learn from her journey will be an exciting experience enjoyed by all our students and guests.”
Koch, a native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, began her career as an electrical engineer at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Laboratory for High Energy Astrophysics and was selected as an astronaut by NASA in 2013. She completed astronaut candidate training in 2015.
Most recently, Koch served as flight engineer on the International Space Station for Expedition 59, 60 and 61. She set a record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman with a total of 328 days in space. Koch also has conducted six spacewalks, including the first all-female spacewalks, totaling 42 hours and 15 minutes.
“Galveston College has an established record of bringing to campus speakers of great accomplishment,” said Michael Berberich, who served on the Galveston College Faculty Professional Development Committee for several decades. “Students and community members learn of experiences and groundbreaking ideas first-hand, and get to ask questions in-person. Astronaut Christina Koch’s presentation, ‘My Space Journey’ promises both adventure and insight.”
The lecture series is free and open to the public. Seating is limited. For more information, call 409-944-1273.
