Despite the economic hardships created by the response to the COVID-19 crisis, sales tax revenue for the City of Athens is up 9.4% since last year.
For the year to date, Athens has received $3.21 million in sales tax revenue, according to the Athens Daily Review.
Athens Finance Director Mandie Quigg told the Daily Review that the city is “a little baffled, too” by the most recent sales tax allocation from the state. The June allocation for Athens was $608,244, a 23.7% increase over the May allocation.
However, Quigg told the Daily Review that she would have to wait for a breakdown from Texas Comptroller Glen Hegar's office before in order to better understand what areas were up and accounted for the increase.
Athens was not the only local community to see increases in revenue for June.
Gun Barrel City received $400,486, which is 16.8% more than what it received in May. Chandler also saw a 28.8% increase over May, receiving $76,840 for its June allocation.
